How to Save Money on Gas in Canada

The price of gas is out of our control. But you can do something about how much you spend. Here’s our best tips on how to save money on gas in Canada.

As gas prices continue to rise, it is becoming more expensive to get back and forth to work (and all of the other places that you go). However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of ways to save money when buying gas.

Here are some tips to help.

Compare prices

Even a few cents can make a big difference when filling up your tank. It may be worth driving a few extra miles if you can get a better deal. There are apps to help you check gas prices from your phone like CAA, Gas Buddy and Waze.

Get reward card

Many gas companies, like Esso, Shell, and Petro Canada, offer rewards every time that you buy gas. They also offer points when you buy items in the store, which can help you get cheaper gas.

Join Costco

Costco is able to buy gas cheaper and passes those savings off to you. Even if you have to spend sixty dollars a year on a membership, you can easily save that in gas quickly. But be warned: the line ups can be pretty long! Use a gas checking app to monitor prices at Costco and compare with your local station. Is the drive (and possible idling) worth it?

Use a credit card that offers rewards on gas

Many credit cards offer rewards for those who use them regularly. You may get some extra rewards when you use it toward gas. However, you should make sure that you pay off the card every month, or you will soon find yourself in debt, just to save some money on gas.

Before you pump, make sure that you shop around. Even if you have to drive a little farther, it may be worth the savings. You also should get reward cards at gas stations, and you may want to join Costco for their savings. All of these ways will help you save money at the pump.

Fill up during the week

GasBuddy studied gas prices last year in order to find out when you should get gas. Surprisingly, Tuesdays and Wednesdays seemed to be the best day to fill up. You should avoid filling up on Thursday and Friday.

Watch how you drive

Prices at the pumps isn’t the only thing that affects your bottom line. Your driving habits can either save or cost you money. Here are a few simple things you can do to improve your fuel consumption:

  • Keep your tires inflated
  • Don’t use your car as a storage
  • Don’t idle more than 30 seconds.
  • Use cruise control on long trips
  • Don’t drive aggressively
